Ephesians 3:8

Context
3:8 To me – less than the least of all the saints 1  – this grace was given, 2  to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ

Ephesians 4:1

Context
Live in Unity

4:1 I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, 3  urge you to live 4  worthily of the calling with which you have been called, 5

Ephesians 5:3

Context
5:3 But 6  among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, 7  or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints. 8

1 sn In Pauline writings saints means any true believer. Thus for Paul to view himself as less than the least of all the saints is to view himself as the most unworthy object of Christ’s redemption.

2 sn The parallel phrases to proclaim and to enlighten which follow indicate why God’s grace was manifested to Paul. Grace was not something just to be received, but to be shared with others (cf. Acts 13:47).

3 tn Grk “prisoner in the Lord.”

4 tn Grk “walk.” The verb “walk” in the NT letters refers to the conduct of one’s life, not to physical walking.

5 sn With which you have been called. The calling refers to the Holy Spirit’s prompting that caused them to believe. The author is thus urging his readers to live a life that conforms to their saved status before God.

6 tn The term “But” translates the δέ (de) in a contrastive way in light of the perfect obedience of Jesus in vv. 1-2 and the vices mentioned in v. 3.

7 tn Grk “all impurity.”

8 tn Grk “just as is fitting for saints.” The καθώς (kaqws) was rendered with “as” and the sense is causal, i.e., “for” or “because.” The negative particle “not” (“for these are not proper for the saints”) in this clause was supplied in English so as to make the sense very clear, i.e., that these vices are not befitting of those who name the name of Christ.
