Ecclesiastes 7:10
Context7:10 Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these days?” 1
for it is not wise to ask that. 2
Ecclesiastes 7:17
Context7:17 Do not be excessively wicked and do not be a fool;
otherwise 3 you might die before your time.
Ecclesiastes 11:4
Context11:4 He who watches the wind will not sow,
and he who observes the clouds will not reap. 4
1 tn Heb “these.” “Days” does not appear in the Hebrew text as second time, but is supplied in the translation for smoothness.
2 tn Heb “It is not from wisdom that you ask about this.”
3 tn Heb “Why?” The question is rhetorical.
4 sn This proverb criticizes those who are overly cautious. The farmer who waits for the most opportune moment to plant when there is no wind to blow away the seed, and to reap when there is no rain to ruin a ripe harvest, will never do anything but sit around waiting for the right moment.
