Deuteronomy 9:28

Context
9:28 Otherwise the people of the land 1  from which you brought us will say, “The Lord was unable to bring them to the land he promised them, and because of his hatred for them he has brought them out to kill them in the desert.” 2

Deuteronomy 11:17

Context
11:17 Then the anger of the Lord will erupt 3  against you and he will close up the sky 4  so that it does not rain. The land will not yield its produce, and you will soon be removed 5  from the good land that the Lord 6  is about to give you.

Deuteronomy 27:3

Context
27:3 Then you must inscribe on them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, 7  said to you.

Deuteronomy 28:52

Context
28:52 They will besiege all of your villages 8  until all of your high and fortified walls collapse – those in which you put your confidence throughout the land. They will besiege all your villages throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

1 tc The MT reads only “the land.” Smr supplies עַם (’am, “people”) and LXX and its dependents supply “the inhabitants of the land.” The truncated form found in the MT is adequate to communicate the intended meaning; the words “the people of” are supplied in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Or “wilderness” (so KJV, NASB, NRSV, NLT).

3 tn Heb “will become hot”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “will be kindled”; NAB “will flare up”; NIV, NLT “will burn.”

4 tn Or “heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

5 tn Or “be destroyed”; NAB, NIV “will soon perish.”

6 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 11:4.

7 tn Heb “fathers.”

8 tn Heb “gates,” also in vv. 55, 57.
