Deuteronomy 4:40

4:40 Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth 1  today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the Lord your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.

Deuteronomy 5:16

5:16 Honor 2  your father and your mother just as the Lord your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he 3  is about to give you.

12:21 If the place he 8  chooses to locate his name is too far for you, you may slaughter any of your herd and flock he 9  has given you just as I have stipulated; you may eat them in your villages 10  just as you wish.

14:29 Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you do.

1 tn Heb “commanding” (so NRSV).

2 tn The imperative here means, literally, “regard as heavy” (כַּבֵּד, kabbed). The meaning is that great importance must be ascribed to parents by their children.

3 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “He” in 5:3.

4 tn Heb “may multiply greatly” (so NASB, NRSV); the words “in number” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

5 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 10, 18, 23).

6 tn Heb “only in all the desire of your soul you may sacrifice and eat flesh according to the blessing of the Lord your God which he has given to you.”
