Deuteronomy 4:11

4:11 You approached and stood at the foot of the mountain, a mountain ablaze to the sky above it 1  and yet dark with a thick cloud. 2

4:39 Today realize and carefully consider that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth below – there is no other!

Deuteronomy 5:8

5:8 You must not make for yourself an image 3  of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath. 4 

1 tn Heb “a mountain burning with fire as far as the heart of the heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

2 tn Heb “darkness, cloud, and heavy cloud.”

3 tn Heb “an image, any likeness.”

4 tn Heb “under the earth” (so ASV, NASB, NRSV); NCV “below the land.”
