Deuteronomy 4:10

Context
4:10 You 1  stood before the Lord your God at Horeb and he 2  said to me, “Assemble the people before me so that I can tell them my commands. 3  Then they will learn to revere me all the days they live in the land, and they will instruct their children.”

Deuteronomy 5:16

Context
5:16 Honor 4  your father and your mother just as the Lord your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he 5  is about to give you.

Deuteronomy 16:3

Context
16:3 You must not eat any yeast with it; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast, symbolic of affliction, for you came out of Egypt hurriedly. You must do this so you will remember for the rest of your life the day you came out of the land of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 31:29

Context
31:29 For I know that after I die you will totally 6  corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly 7  before the Lord, inciting him to anger because of your actions.” 8

1 tn The text begins with “(the) day (in) which.” In the Hebrew text v. 10 is subordinate to v. 11, but for stylistic reasons the translation treats v. 10 as an independent clause, necessitating the omission of the subordinating temporal phrase at the beginning of the verse.

2 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 4:3.

3 tn Heb “my words.” See v. 13; in Hebrew the “ten commandments” are the “ten words.”

4 tn The imperative here means, literally, “regard as heavy” (כַּבֵּד, kabbed). The meaning is that great importance must be ascribed to parents by their children.

5 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “He” in 5:3.

6 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “totally.”

7 tn Heb “do the evil.”

8 tn Heb “the work of your hands.”
