Deuteronomy 18:2

Context
18:2 They 1  will have no inheritance in the midst of their fellow Israelites; 2  the Lord alone is their inheritance, just as he had told them.

Deuteronomy 18:15

Context

18:15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you – from your fellow Israelites; 3  you must listen to him.

Deuteronomy 23:19

Context
Respect for Others’ Property

23:19 You must not charge interest on a loan to your fellow Israelite, 4  whether on money, food, or anything else that has been loaned with interest.

Deuteronomy 25:3

Context
25:3 The judge 5  may sentence him to forty blows, 6  but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite 7  with contempt.

1 tn Heb “he” (and throughout the verse).

2 tn Heb “brothers,” but not referring to actual siblings. Cf. NASB “their countrymen”; NRSV “the other members of the community.”

3 tc The MT expands here on the usual formula by adding “from among you” (cf. Deut 17:15; 18:18; Smr; a number of Greek texts). The expansion seems to be for the purpose of emphasis, i.e., the prophet to come must be not just from Israel but an Israelite by blood.

tn “from your brothers,” but not referring to actual siblings. Cf. NAB “from among your own kinsmen”; NASB “from your countrymen”; NRSV “from among your own people.” A similar phrase occurs in v. 17.

4 tn Heb “to your brother” (likewise in the following verse). Since this is not limited to actual siblings, “fellow Israelite” is used in the translation (cf. NAB, NASB “countrymen”).

5 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the judge) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn Heb “Forty blows he may strike him”; however, since the judge is to witness the punishment (v. 2) it is unlikely the judge himself administered it.

7 tn Heb “your brothers” but not limited only to an actual sibling; cf. NAB) “your kinsman”; NRSV, NLT “your neighbor.”
