Deuteronomy 17:1

Context
17:1 You must not sacrifice to him 1  a bull or sheep that has a blemish or any other defect, because that is considered offensive 2  to the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 22:1

Context
Laws Concerning Preservation of Life

22:1 When you see 3  your neighbor’s 4  ox or sheep going astray, do not ignore it; 5  you must return it without fail 6  to your neighbor.

1 tn Heb “to the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 16:1.

2 tn The Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה (toevah, “an abomination”; cf. NAB) describes persons, things, or practices offensive to ritual or moral order. See M. Grisanti, NIDOTTE 4:314-18; see also the note on the word “abhorrent” in Deut 7:25.

3 tn Heb “you must not see,” but, if translated literally into English, the statement is misleading.

4 tn Heb “brother’s” (also later in this verse). In this context it is not limited to one’s siblings, however; cf. NAB “your kinsman’s.”

5 tn Heb “hide yourself.”

6 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with the words “without fail.”
