Deuteronomy 33:5

Context

33:5 The Lord 7  was king over Jeshurun, 8

when the leaders of the people assembled,

the tribes of Israel together. 9

1 tn Heb “the one who stands before you”; NAB “your aide”; TEV “your helper.”

2 tn Heb “it”; the referent (the land) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

3 sn Some see in this statement an argument for the deterrent effect of capital punishment (Deut 17:13; 19:20; 21:21).

4 tn Heb “called,” i.e., “known as.”

5 tn Heb “house.”

6 tn Cf. NIV, NCV “The Family of the Unsandaled.”

7 tn Heb “he was king.” The present translation avoids the sudden shift in person and the mistaken impression that Moses is the referent by specifying the referent as “the Lord.”

8 sn Jeshurun is a term of affection referring to Israel, derived from the Hebrew verb יָשַׁר (yashar, “be upright”). See note on the term in Deut 32:15.

9 sn The following blessing is given to the tribes in order, although the tribe of Simeon is curiously missing from the list.
