Deuteronomy 1:21

1 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” The pronoun (“he”) has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons, to avoid repetition.

2 tn Or “has given you the land” (cf. NAB, NIV, NRSV).

3 tn The imperative here means, literally, “regard as heavy” (כַּבֵּד, kabbed). The meaning is that great importance must be ascribed to parents by their children.

4 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “He” in 5:3.

5 tn Heb “and your houses,” referring to entire households. The pronouns “you” and “your” are plural in the Hebrew text.

6 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

7 tn Heb “gates.”

8 tn Heb “does the evil in the eyes of the Lord your God.”
