Daniel 2:44

Context
2:44 In the days of those kings the God of heaven will raise up an everlasting kingdom that will not be destroyed and a kingdom that will not be left to another people. It will break in pieces and bring about the demise of all these kingdoms. But it will stand forever.

Daniel 5:2

Context
5:2 While under the influence 1  of the wine, Belshazzar issued an order to bring in the gold and silver vessels – the ones that Nebuchadnezzar his father 2  had confiscated 3  from the temple in Jerusalem 4  – so that the king and his nobles, together with his wives and his concubines, could drink from them. 5

Daniel 9:27

Context

9:27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one week. 6

But in the middle of that week

he will bring sacrifices and offerings to a halt.

On the wing 7  of abominations will come 8  one who destroys,

until the decreed end is poured out on the one who destroys.”

1 tn Or perhaps, “when he had tasted” (cf. NASB) in the sense of officially initiating the commencement of the banquet. The translation above seems preferable, however, given the clear evidence of inebriation in the context (cf. also CEV “he got drunk and ordered”).

2 tn Or “ancestor”; or “predecessor” (also in vv. 11, 13, 18). The Aramaic word translated “father” can on occasion denote these other relationships.

3 tn Or “taken.”

5 sn Making use of sacred temple vessels for an occasion of reveling and drunkenness such as this would have been a religious affront of shocking proportions to the Jewish captives.

6 tn Heb “one seven” (also later in this line).

7 tn The referent of the Hebrew word כְּנַף (kÿnaf, “wing”) is unclear here. The LXX and Theodotion have “the temple.” Some English versions (e.g., NAB, NIV) take this to mean “a wing of the temple,” but this is not clear.

8 tn The Hebrew text does not have this verb, but it has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
