Daniel 1:5

Context
1:5 So the king assigned them a daily ration 1  from his royal delicacies 2  and from the wine he himself drank. They were to be trained 3  for the next three years. At the end of that time they were to enter the king’s service. 4

Daniel 6:10

Context

6:10 When Daniel realized 5  that a written decree had been issued, he entered his home, where the windows 6  in his upper room opened toward Jerusalem. 7  Three 8  times daily he was 9  kneeling 10  and offering prayers and thanks to his God just as he had been accustomed to do previously.

Daniel 8:13

Context

8:13 Then I heard a holy one 11  speaking. Another holy one said to the one who was speaking, “To what period of time does the vision pertain – this vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the destructive act of rebellion and the giving over of both the sanctuary and army to be trampled?”

1 tn Heb “a thing of a day in its day.”

2 tn Heb “from the delicacies of the king.”

3 tn Or “educated.” See HALOT 179 s.v. I גדל.

4 tn Heb “stand before the king.”

5 tn Aram “knew.”

6 sn In later rabbinic thought this verse was sometimes cited as a proof text for the notion that one should pray only in a house with windows. See b. Berakhot 34b.

7 map For the location of Jerusalem see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

8 sn This is apparently the only specific mention in the OT of prayer being regularly offered three times a day. The practice was probably not unique to Daniel, however.

9 tc Read with several medieval Hebrew MSS and printed editions הֲוָה (havah) rather than the MT הוּא (hu’).

10 tn Aram “kneeling on his knees” (so NASB).

sn No specific posture for offering prayers is prescribed in the OT. Kneeling, as here, and standing were both practiced.

11 sn The holy one referred to here is presumably an angel. Cf. 4:13[10], 23 [20].
