Acts 7:6

Context
7:6 But God spoke as follows: ‘Your 1  descendants will be foreigners 2  in a foreign country, whose citizens will enslave them and mistreat them for four hundred years. 3

Acts 13:20

Context
13:20 All this took 4  about four hundred fifty years. After this 5  he gave them judges until the time of 6  Samuel the prophet.

1 tn Grk “that his”; the discourse switches from indirect to direct with the following verbs. For consistency the entire quotation is treated as second person direct discourse in the translation.

2 tn Or “will be strangers,” that is, one who lives as a noncitizen of a foreign country.

3 sn A quotation from Gen 15:13. Exod 12:40 specifies the sojourn as 430 years.

4 tn The words “all this took” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied to make a complete statement in English. There is debate over where this period of 450 years fits and what it includes: (1) It could include the years in Egypt, the conquest of Canaan, and the distribution of the land; (2) some connect it with the following period of the judges. This latter approach seems to conflict with 1 Kgs 6:1; see also Josephus, Ant. 8.3.1 (8.61).

5 tn Grk “And after these things.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

6 tn The words “the time of” are not in the Greek text, but are implied.
