Acts 4:4

Context
4:4 But many of those who had listened to 1  the message 2  believed, and the number of the men 3  came to about five thousand.

Acts 4:34

Context
4:34 For there was no one needy 4  among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling 5  them 6  and bringing the proceeds from the sales

1 tn Or “had heard.”

2 tn Or “word.”

3 tn In the historical setting it is likely that only men are referred to here. The Greek term ἀνήρ (anhr) usually refers to males or husbands rather than people in general. Thus to translate “of the people” would give a false impression of the number, since any women and children were apparently not included in the count.

4 tn Or “poor.”

5 tn Grk “houses, selling them were bringing.” The participle πωλοῦντες (pwlounte") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

6 tn The word “them” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the modern English reader.
