4:36 So Joseph, a Levite who was a native of Cyprus, called by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated “son of encouragement”), 1

Context
7:14 So Joseph sent a message 2  and invited 3  his father Jacob and all his relatives to come, seventy-five people 4  in all.

1 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author. Note how the actions of Barnabas are in keeping with the meaning of his nickname. He stands in contrast to Ananias and Sapphira in 5:1-11.

2 tn The words “a message” are not in the Greek text, but are implied.

3 tn Or “Joseph had his father summoned” (BDAG 121 s.v. ἀποστέλλω 2.b).

4 tn Grk “souls” (here an idiom for the whole person).
