Context

4:26 The kings of the earth stood together, 1

and the rulers assembled together,

against the Lord and against his 2  Christ. 3

Acts 14:5

Context
14:5 When both the Gentiles and the Jews (together with their rulers) made 4  an attempt to mistreat 5  them and stone them, 6

1 tn Traditionally, “The kings of the earth took their stand.”

2 tn Or “Messiah”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.”

sn See the note on Christ in 2:31.

3 sn A quotation from Ps 2:1-2.

4 tn Grk “So there came about an attempt” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

5 tn On this verb see BDAG 1022 s.v. ὑβρίζω.

6 tn The direct object “them” is repeated after both verbs in the translation for stylistic reasons, although it occurs only after λιθοβολῆσαι (liqobolhsai) in the Greek text.
