Acts 3:12

Context
3:12 When Peter saw this, he declared to the people, “Men of Israel, 1  why are you amazed at this? Why 2  do you stare at us as if we had made this man 3  walk by our own power or piety?

Acts 26:20

Context
26:20 but I declared to those in Damascus first, and then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, 4  and to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, 5  performing deeds consistent with 6  repentance.

1 tn Or perhaps “People of Israel,” since this was taking place in Solomon’s Portico and women may have been present. The Greek ἄνδρες ᾿Ισραηλῖται (andre" Israhlitai) used in the plural would normally mean “men, gentlemen” (BDAG 79 s.v. ἀνήρ 1.a).

2 tn Grk “or why.”

3 tn Grk “him”; the referent (the man) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tn BDAG 1093-94 s.v. χώρα 2.b states, “of the provincial name (1 Macc 8:3) ἡ χώρα τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας Ac 26:20.”

5 sn That they should repent and turn to God. This is the shortest summary of Paul’s message that he preached.

6 tn BDAG 93 s.v. ἄξιος 1.b, “καρποὶ ἄ. τῆς μετανοίας fruits in keeping with your repentanceLk 3:8; Mt 3:8. For this . τῆς μετανοίας ἔργα Ac 26:20.” Note how Paul preached the gospel offer and the issue of response together, side by side.
