Acts 23:4

Context
23:4 Those standing near him 1  said, “Do you dare insult 2  God’s high priest?”

Acts 7:32

Context
7:32I am the God of your forefathers, 3  the God of Abraham, Isaac, 4  and Jacob.’ 5  Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely. 6

1 tn The word “him” is not in the Greek text but is implied.

2 tn L&N 33.393 has for λοιδορέω (loidorew) “to speak in a highly insulting manner – ‘to slander, to insult strongly, slander, insult.’”

sn Insult God’s high priest. Paul was close to violation of the Mosaic law with his response, as the citation from Exod 22:28 in v. 5 makes clear.

3 tn Or “ancestors”; Grk “fathers.”

4 tn Grk “and Isaac,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

5 sn A quotation from Exod 3:6. The phrase suggests the God of promise, the God of the nation.

6 tn Or “to investigate,” “to contemplate” (BDAG 522 s.v. κατανοέω 2).
