Acts 7:6

Context
7:6 But God spoke as follows: ‘Your 4  descendants will be foreigners 5  in a foreign country, whose citizens will enslave them and mistreat them for four hundred years. 6

1 tn Grk “So there came about an attempt” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

2 tn On this verb see BDAG 1022 s.v. ὑβρίζω.

3 tn The direct object “them” is repeated after both verbs in the translation for stylistic reasons, although it occurs only after λιθοβολῆσαι (liqobolhsai) in the Greek text.

4 tn Grk “that his”; the discourse switches from indirect to direct with the following verbs. For consistency the entire quotation is treated as second person direct discourse in the translation.

5 tn Or “will be strangers,” that is, one who lives as a noncitizen of a foreign country.

6 sn A quotation from Gen 15:13. Exod 12:40 specifies the sojourn as 430 years.
