Acts 12:1

Context
James is Killed and Peter Imprisoned

12:1 About that time King Herod 1  laid hands on 2  some from the church to harm them. 3

Acts 16:28

Context
16:28 But Paul called out loudly, 4  “Do not harm yourself, 5  for we are all here!”

Acts 28:5

Context
28:5 However, 6  Paul 7  shook 8  the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.

1 sn King Herod was Herod Agrippa I, the grandson of Herod I (Herod the Great). His mediocre career is summarized in Josephus, Ant. 18-19. This event took place in a.d. 42 or 43.

2 tn Or “King Herod had some from the church arrested.”

3 tn Or “to cause them injury.”

4 tn Grk “But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying.” The dative phrase μεγάλῃ φωνῇ (megalh fwnh) has been simplified as an English adverb (“loudly”), and the participle λέγων (legwn) has not been translated since it is redundant in English.

5 sn Do not harm yourself. Again the irony is that Paul is the agent through whom the jailer is spared.

6 tn BDAG 737 s.v. οὖν 4 indicates the particle has an adversative sense here: “but, however.”

7 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Paul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

8 tn Grk “shaking the creature off…he suffered no harm.” The participle ἀποτινάξας (apotinaxa") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
