Acts 12:1

Context
James is Killed and Peter Imprisoned

12:1 About that time King Herod 7  laid hands on 8  some from the church to harm them. 9

Acts 19:23

Context

19:23 At 10  that time 11  a great disturbance 12  took place concerning the Way. 13

1 tn Grk “In these days,” but the dative generally indicates a specific time.

2 tn The word “some” is not in the Greek text, but is usually used in English when an unspecified number is mentioned.

3 sn Prophets are mentioned only here and in 13:1 and 21:10 in Acts.

4 sn Came down from Jerusalem. Antioch in Syria lies due north of Jerusalem. In Western languages it is common to speak of north as “up” and south as “down,” but the NT maintains the Hebrew idiom which speaks of any direction away from Jerusalem as down (since Mount Zion was thought of in terms of altitude).

6 sn Antioch was a city in Syria (not Antioch in Pisidia). See the note in 11:19.

7 sn King Herod was Herod Agrippa I, the grandson of Herod I (Herod the Great). His mediocre career is summarized in Josephus, Ant. 18-19. This event took place in a.d. 42 or 43.

8 tn Or “King Herod had some from the church arrested.”

9 tn Or “to cause them injury.”

10 tn Grk “There happened at that time.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. Instead the verb “took place” has been supplied in the translation.

11 tn BDAG 512 s.v. κατά B.2.a, “in definite indications of time…Of the past: κ. ἐκεῖνον τὸν καιρόν at that time, thenAc 12:1; 19:23.”

12 tn Grk “no little disturbance” (an idiom; see BDAG 991 s.v. τάραχος 2).

13 sn The Way refers to the Christian movement (Christianity).
