Acts 11:18

Context
11:18 When they heard this, 1  they ceased their objections 2  and praised 3  God, saying, “So then, God has granted the repentance 4  that leads to life even to the Gentiles.” 5

Acts 27:24

Context
27:24 and said, 6  ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! You must stand before 7  Caesar, 8  and God has graciously granted you the safety 9  of all who are sailing with you.’

Acts 7:10

Context
7:10 and rescued him from all his troubles, and granted him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made 10  him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.

1 tn Grk “these things.”

2 tn Or “became silent,” but this would create an apparent contradiction with the subsequent action of praising God. The point, in context, is that they ceased objecting to what Peter had done.

3 tn Or “glorified.”

4 sn Here the summary phrase for responding to the gospel is the repentance that leads to life. Note how the presence of life is tied to the presence of the Spirit (cf. John 4:7-42; 7:37-39).

5 sn In the Greek text the phrase even to the Gentiles is in an emphatic position.

6 tn Grk “came to me saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

7 tn BDAG 778 s.v. παρίστημι/παριστάνω 2.a.α states, “Also as a t.t. of legal usage appear before, come beforeΚαίσαρι σε δεῖ παραστῆναι you must stand before the Emperor (as judge) Ac 27:24.” See Acts 23:11. Luke uses the verb δεῖ (dei) to describe what must occur.

8 tn Or “before the emperor” (“Caesar” is a title for the Roman emperor).

9 tn Grk “God has graciously granted you all who are sailing with you.” The words “the safety of” have been supplied to clarify the meaning of the verb κεχάρισται (kecaristai) in this context.

sn The safety of all who are sailing with you. In a sense, Paul’s presence protects them all. For Luke, it serves as a picture of what the gospel does through Christ and through the one who brings the message.

10 tn Or “appointed.” See Gen 41:41-43.
