2 Samuel 7:28

Context
7:28 Now, O sovereign Lord, you are the true God! 1  May your words prove to be true! 2  You have made this good promise to your servant! 3

2 Samuel 22:1

Context
David Sings to the Lord

22:1 4 David sang 5  to the Lord the words of this song when 6  the Lord rescued him from the power 7  of all his enemies, including Saul. 8

1 tn Heb “the God.” The article indicates uniqueness here.

2 tn The translation understands the prefixed verb form as a jussive, indicating David’s wish/prayer. Another option is to take the form as an imperfect and translate “your words are true.”

3 tn Heb “and you have spoken to your servant this good thing.”

4 sn In this long song of thanks, David affirms that God is his faithful protector. He recalls in highly poetic fashion how God intervened in awesome power and delivered him from death. His experience demonstrates that God vindicates those who are blameless and remain loyal to him. True to his promises, God gives the king victory on the battlefield and enables him to subdue nations. A parallel version of the song appears in Ps 18.

5 tn Heb “spoke.”

6 tn Heb “in the day,” or “at the time.”

7 tn Heb “hand.”

8 tn Heb “and from the hand of Saul.”
