2 Samuel 7:23

Context
7:23 Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation 1  on the earth? Their God 2  went 3  to claim 4  a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land, 5  before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods. 6

2 Samuel 11:25

Context
11:25 David said to the messenger, “Tell Joab, ‘Don’t let this thing upset you. 7  There is no way to anticipate whom the sword will cut down. 8  Press the battle against the city and conquer 9  it.’ Encourage him with these words.” 10

2 Samuel 16:21

Context
16:21 Ahithophel replied to Absalom, “Have sex with 11  your father’s concubines whom he left to care for the palace. All Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father. Then your followers will be motivated to support you.” 12

1 tn Heb “a nation, one.”

2 tn Heb “whose God” or “because God.” In the Hebrew text this clause is subordinated to what precedes. The clauses are separated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

3 tn The verb is plural in Hebrew, agreeing grammatically with the divine name, which is a plural of degree.

4 tn Heb “redeem.”

5 tn Heb “and to do for you [plural form] the great [thing] and awesome [things] for your land.”

6 tn Heb “from Egypt, nations and their gods.” The LXX has “nations and tents,” which reflects a mistaken metathesis of letters in אֶלֹהָיו (elohav, “its gods”) and אֹהָלָיו (’ohalav, “its tents”).

7 tn Heb “let not this matter be evil in your eyes.”

8 tn Heb “according to this and according to this the sword devours.”

9 tn Heb “overthrow.”

10 tn The Hebrew text does not have “with these words.” They are supplied in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons.

11 tn Heb “go to”; NAB “have (+ sexual NCV) relations with”; TEV “have intercourse with”; NLT “Go and sleep with.”

12 tn Heb “and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”
