2 Kings 8:19

Context
8:19 But the Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah. He preserved Judah for the sake of 1  his servant David to whom he had promised a perpetual dynasty. 2

2 Kings 10:3

Context
10:3 pick the best and most capable 3  of your master’s sons, place him on his father’s throne, and defend 4  your master’s dynasty.”

1 tn The Hebrew has only one sentence, “and the Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah for the sake of.” The translation divides it for the sake of clarity.

2 tn Heb “just as he had promised to give him and his sons a lamp all the days.” The metaphorical “lamp” symbolizes the Davidic dynasty; this is reflected in the translation.

3 tn Hebrew יָשָׁר (yashar) does not have its normal moral/ethical nuance here (“upright”), but a more neutral sense of “proper, right, suitable.” For the gloss “capable,” see HALOT 450 s.v. יָשָׁר.

4 tn Or “fight for.”
