5:13 His servants approached and said to him, “O master, 1  if the prophet had told you to do some difficult task, 2  you would have been willing to do it. 3  It seems you should be happy that he simply said, “Wash and you will be healed.” 4 

2 Kings 14:6

14:6 But he did not execute the sons of the assassins. He obeyed the Lord’s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses, 5  “Fathers must not be put to death for what their sons do, 6  and sons must not be put to death for what their fathers do. 7  A man must be put to death only for his own sin.” 8 

2 Kings 17:26

17:26 The king of Assyria was told, 9  “The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land, so he has sent lions among them. They are killing the people 10  because they do not know the requirements of the God of the land.”

1 tn Heb “my father,” reflecting the perspective of each individual servant. To address their master as “father” would emphasize his authority and express their respect. See BDB 3 s.v. אָב and the similar idiomatic use of “father” in 2 Kgs 2:12.

2 tn Heb “a great thing.”

3 tn Heb “would you not do [it]?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Of course you would.”

4 tn Heb “How much more [when] he said, “Wash and be healed.” The second imperative (“be healed”) states the expected result of obeying the first (‘wash”).

5 tn Heb “as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses which the Lord commanded, saying.”

6 tn Heb “on account of sons.”

7 tn Heb “on account of fathers.”

8 sn This law is recorded in Deut 24:16.

9 tn Heb “and they said to the king of Assyria, saying.” The plural subject of the verb is indefinite.

10 tn Heb “Look they are killing them.”
