2 Kings 2:16

Context
2:16 They said to him, “Look, there are fifty capable men with your servants. Let them go and look for your master, for the wind sent from the Lord 1  may have carried him away and dropped him on one of the hills or in one of the valleys.” But Elisha 2  replied, “Don’t send them out.”

2 Kings 7:13

Context
7:13 One of his advisers replied, “Pick some men and have them take five of the horses that are left in the city. (Even if they are killed, their fate will be no different than that of all the Israelite people – we’re all going to die!) 3  Let’s send them out so we can know for sure what’s going on.” 4 

2 Kings 10:6

10:6 He wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are really on my side and are willing to obey me, 5  then take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel at this time tomorrow.” 6  Now the king had seventy sons, and the prominent 7  men of the city were raising them.

2 Kings 10:25

10:25 When he finished offering the burnt sacrifice, Jehu ordered the royal guard 8  and officers, “Come in and strike them down! Don’t let any escape!” So the royal guard and officers struck them down with the sword and left their bodies lying there. 9  Then they entered the inner sanctuary of the temple of Baal. 10

3 tn Heb “Let them take five of the remaining horses that remain in it. Look, they are like all the people of Israel that remain in it. Look, they are like all the people of Israel that have come to an end.” The MT is dittographic here; the words “that remain in it. Look they are like all the people of Israel” have been accidentally repeated. The original text read, “Let them take five of the remaining horses that remain in it. Look, they are like all the people of Israel that have come to an end.”

4 tn Heb “and let us send so we might see.”

5 tn Heb “If you are mine and you are listening to my voice.”

6 sn Jehu’s command is intentionally vague. Does he mean that they should bring the guardians (those who are “heads” over Ahab’s sons) for a meeting, or does he mean that they should bring the literal heads of Ahab’s sons with them? (So LXX, Syriac Peshitta, and some mss of the Targum) The city leaders interpret his words in the literal sense, but Jehu’s command is so ambiguous he is able to deny complicity in the executions (see v. 9).

7 tn Heb “great,” probably in wealth, position, and prestige.

8 tn Heb “runners.”

9 tn Heb “and they threw.” No object appears. According to M. Cogan and H. Tadmor (II Kings [AB], 116), this is an idiom for leaving a corpse unburied.

10 tn Heb “and they came to the city of the house of Baal.” It seems unlikely that a literal city is meant. Some emend עִיר (’ir), “city,” to דְּבִיר (dÿvir) “holy place,” or suggest that עִיר is due to dittography of the immediately preceding עַד (’ad) “to.” Perhaps עִיר is here a technical term meaning “fortress” or, more likely, “inner room.”
