• [2Co 5:15] O The Bitter Shame And Sorrow

  O the bitter shame and sorrow, That a time could ever be, When I let the Savior’s pity Plead in vain, and proudly answered, “All of self, and none of Thee!” Yet He found me; I beheld Him Bleeding on th’accursèd tree, Heard Him pray, “Forgive them, Father!” And my wistful heart said faintly, “Some of self, and some of Thee!” Day by day His tender mercy, Healing, helping, full and free, Sweet and strong, and ah! so patient, Brought me lower, while I whispered, “Less of self, and more of Thee!” Higher than the highest heavens, Deeper than the deepest sea, Lord, Thy love at last hath conquered: Grant me now my supplication, “None of self, and all of Thee!”

  Servant of God, remember The stream thy soul bedewing, The grace that came upon thee Anointing and renewing. When kindly slumber calls thee, Upon thy bed reclining, Trace thou the cross of Jesus, Thy heart and forehead signing. The cross dissolves the darkness, And drives away temptation; It calms the wavering spirit By quiet consecration. Begone, begone, the terrors Of vague and formless dreaming; Begone, thou fell deceiver, With all thy boasted scheming. Begone, thou crooked serpent, Who, twisting and pursuing, By fraud and lie preparest The simple soul’s undoing. Tremble, for Christ is near us, Depart, for here He dwelleth, And this, the sign thou knowest, Thy strong battalions quelleth. Then while the weary body Its rest in sleep is nearing, The heart will muse in silence On Christ and His appearing. To God, eternal Father, To Christ, our King, be glory, And to the Holy Spirit, In never ending story.

• [2Co 5:21] O Mystery Of Love Divine

  O mystery of love divine That thought and thanks o’erpowers! Lord Jesus, was our portion Thine, And is Thy portion ours? Emmanuel, didst Thou take our place To set us in Thine own? Didst Thou our low estate embrace To lift us to Thy throne? Didst Thou fulfill each righteous deed, God’s perfect will express, That we th’unfaithful ones might plead Thy perfect faithfulness? For Thee the Father’s hidden face? For Thee the bitter cry? For us the Father’s endless grace, The song of victory? Our load of sin and misery Didst Thou, the Sinless, bear? Thy spotless robe of purity Do we the sinners wear? Lord Jesus, is it even so? Have bee been lovèd thus? What love can we on Thee bestow Who hast exchanged with us? Thou, who our very place didst take, Dwell in our very heart: Thou, who Thy portion ours dost make, Thyself, Thyself impart.

• [2Co 8:18] What Thanks And Praise To Thee We Owe

  What thanks and praise to Thee we owe, O Priest and Sacrifice divine, For Thy dear saint through whom we know So many a gracious word of Thine; Whom Thou didst choose to tell the tale Of all Thy manhood’s toils and tears, And for a moment lift the veil That hides Thy boyhood’s spotless years. How many a soul with guilt oppressed Has learned to hear the joyful sound In that sweet tale of sin confessed The Father’s love, the lost and found? How many a child of sin and shame Has refuge found from guilty fears Through her, who to the Savior came With costly ointments and with tears! What countless worshippers have sung, In lowly fane or lofty choir, The song that loosed the silent tongue Of him who was the Baptist’s sire! And still the Church through all her days Uplifts the strains that never cease, The blessèd virgin’s hymn of praise, The agèd Simeon’s words of peace. O happy saint! whose sacred page, So rich in words of truth and love, Pours on the Church from age to age This healing unction from above; The witness of the Savior’s life, The great Apostle’s chosen friend Through weary years of toil and strife And still found faithful to the end. So grant us, Lord, like him to live, Beloved by man, approved by Thee, Till Thou at last the summons give, And we, with him, Thy face shall see.
