Jehoiakim’s Reign

36:5 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. 23  He did evil in the sight of 24  the Lord his God.

1 tn Heb “because this turn of events was from God.”

2 tn Heb “so that the Lord might bring to pass his word which he spoke.”

3 tn Or “resident aliens.”

4 tn Heb “had fallen upon him.”

5 tn Heb “the seer.”

6 tn Heb “Should we go against Ramoth Gilead for war or should I refrain?”

7 tn Though Jehoshaphat had requested an oracle from “the Lord” (יְהוָה, yÿhvah, “Yahweh”), the Israelite prophets stop short of actually using this name and substitute the title הָאֱלֹהִים (haelohim, “the God”). This ambiguity may explain in part Jehoshaphat’s hesitancy and caution (vv. 7-8). He seems to doubt that the 400 are genuine prophets of the Lord.

8 tn Heb “for [or “indeed”] upon you are our eyes.”

9 tn Heb “his”; the referent (Joash) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

10 tn Heb “And his sons and the abundance of the oracle[s] against him, and the founding of the house of God, look are they not written on the writing of the scroll of the kings?”

11 tn Heb “and they caused to stand a word to cause a voice to pass through.”

12 tn The words “summoning the people” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

13 tn Heb “because not for abundance had they done as written.”

14 tn Heb “and the sons of Israel and Judah.”

15 tn Heb “heaps, heaps.” Repetition of the noun draws attention to the large number of heaps.

16 tn Heb “With him is an arm of flesh.”

17 tn Or “people.”

18 tn Heb “hand.”

19 tn Heb “Is not Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to die by hunger and thirst, saying, ‘The Lord our God will rescue us from the hand of the king of Assyria’?’

20 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 14, 15), but in this context the term does not necessarily refer to Sennacherib’s ancestors, but to his predecessors on the Assyrian throne.

21 tn Heb “hand.”

22 tn Heb “to purify the land and the house.”
