10:14 and followed the advice of the younger ones. He said, “My father imposed heavy demands on you; 1  I will make them even heavier. 2  My father punished you with ordinary whips; I will punish you with whips that really sting your flesh.” 3 

2 Chronicles 24:24

Context
24:24 Even though the invading Syrian army was relatively weak, the Lord handed over to them Judah’s very large army, 4  for the people of Judah 5  had abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors. The Syrians 6  gave Joash what he deserved. 7 

1 tc The Hebrew text reads, “I will make heavy your yoke,” but many medieval Hebrew mss and other ancient textual witnesses have, “my father made heavy your yoke.”

2 tn Heb “but I will add to your yoke.”

3 tn Heb “My father punished you with whips, but I [will punish you] with scorpions.” “Scorpions” might allude to some type of torture, but more likely it refers to a type of whip that inflicts an especially biting, painful wound.

4 tn Heb “though with a small amount of men the army of Aram came, the Lord gave into their hand an army [that was] very large.”

5 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the people of Judah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the Syrians) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

7 tn Heb “executed judgments [on] Joash.”
