Context
1:14 and our Lord’s grace was abundant, bringing faith and love in Christ Jesus. 1

1 Timothy 2:5

Context
2:5 For there is one God and one intermediary 2  between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, 3

1 Timothy 6:14

Context
6:14 to obey 4  this command 5  without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ

1 tn Grk “with faith and love in Christ Jesus.”

2 tn Traditionally this word (μεσίτης, mesith") is rendered “mediator,” but this conveys a wrong impression in contemporary English. Jesus was not a mediator, for example, who worked for compromise between opposing parties. Instead he was the only one able to go between man and God to enable them to have a relationship, but entirely on God’s terms.

3 tn Grk “one mediator between God and mankind, the human, Christ Jesus.”

4 tn The Greek word τηρέω (threw, traditionally translated “keep”) in this context connotes preservation of and devotion to an object as well as obedience.

5 tn Grk “the command.”

sn The command refers to the duties laid upon Timothy for his ministry in Ephesus (1 Tim 1:3-20; 6:2c-5).
