29:5 Isn’t this David, of whom they sang as they danced, 14

‘Saul has struck down his thousands,

but David his tens of thousands’?”

1 tn Cf. NAB, NRSV, NLT “Jeshanah.”

2 sn The name Ebenezer (אֶבֶן הָעָזֶר) means “stone of help” in Hebrew (cf. TEV); NLT adds the meaning parenthetically after the name.

3 tc The LXX reads “saw.” See v. 27.

4 tn Heb “caused seven of his sons to pass before Samuel.” This could be taken as referring to seven sons in addition to the three mentioned before this, but 1 Sam 17:12 says Jesse had eight sons, not eleven. 1 Chr 2:13-15 lists only seven sons, including David. However, 1 Chr 27:18 mentions an additional son, named Elihu.

5 tn The words “about it” are not present in the Hebrew text, although they are implied.

6 tn Heb “said,” that is, to himself.

7 tn Heb “seeking.”

8 tn Heb “know and see.” The expression is a hendiadys. See also v. 23.

9 tn Heb “his place where his foot is.”

10 tn Heb “blessing.”

11 tn Heb “are walking at the feet of.”

12 tn Heb “blessed” (also in vv. 33, 39).

13 tn Heb “listen to the voice of the Lord.”

14 tn Heb “in dances.”
