1 Samuel 2:13

Context
2:13 Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way: 1  Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest’s attendant would come with a three-pronged fork 2  in his hand.

1 Samuel 20:2

Context

20:2 Jonathan 3  said to him, “By no means are you going to die! My father does nothing 4  large or small without making me aware of it. 5  Why would my father hide this matter from me? It just won’t happen!”

1 Samuel 21:13

Context
21:13 He altered his behavior in their presence. 6  Since he was in their power, 7  he pretended to be insane, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting his saliva run down his beard.

1 Samuel 22:7

Context
22:7 Saul said to his servants who were stationed around him, “Listen up, you Benjaminites! Is Jesse’s son giving fields and vineyards to all of you? Or is he making all of you 8  commanders and officers? 9

1 tn Heb “the habit of the priests with the people [was this].”

2 sn The Hebrew word occurs only twice in the OT, here and again in v. 14. Its exact meaning is not entirely clear, although from the context it appears to be a sacrificial tool used for retrieving things from boiling water.

3 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jonathan) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tc The translation follows the Qere, many medieval Hebrew mss, and the ancient versions in reading “he will not do,” rather than the Kethib of the MT (“do to him”).

5 tn Heb “without uncovering my ear.”

6 tn Heb “in their eyes.”

7 tn Heb “in their hand.”

8 tc The MT has “to all of you.” If this reading is correct, we have here an example of a prepositional phrase functioning as the equivalent of a dative of advantage, which is not impossible from a grammatical point of view. However, the LXX, the Syriac Peshitta, and Vulgate all have “and.” A conjunction rather than a preposition should probably be read on the front of this phrase.

9 tn Heb “officers of a thousand and officers of a hundred.”
