2:13 Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way: 1  Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest’s attendant would come with a three-pronged fork 2  in his hand.

14:13 Jonathan crawled up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer following behind him. Jonathan struck down the Philistines, 3  while his armor bearer came along behind him and killed them. 4

23:3 But David’s men said to him, “We are afraid while we are still here in Judah! What will it be like if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”

1 tn Heb “the habit of the priests with the people [was this].”

2 sn The Hebrew word occurs only twice in the OT, here and again in v. 14. Its exact meaning is not entirely clear, although from the context it appears to be a sacrificial tool used for retrieving things from boiling water.

3 tn Heb “and they fell before Jonathan.”

4 tn Heb “and the one carrying his equipment was killing after him.”
