1 Samuel 31:2

Context
31:2 The Philistines stayed right on the heels 13  of Saul and his sons. They 14  struck down Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.

1 tn Or perhaps “struck down the Philistine official.” See the note at 1 Sam 10:5. Cf. TEV “killed the Philistine commander.”

2 tn Heb “blew the ram’s horn in.”

3 tn The juxtaposition of disjunctive clauses in v.16 indicates synchronic action.

4 tc The LXX reads “saw.” See v. 27.

5 sn The list differs from others. In 1 Sam 31:2 (= 1 Chr 10:2), Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua are listed as Saul’s sons, while 1 Chr 8:33 and 9:39 list Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

6 tn Heb “seeking.”

7 tn Heb “stay in.”

8 tn Heb “and hide yourself.”

9 tn Heb “and Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan.”

10 tc Heb “and Jonathan arose.” Instead of MT’s וַיָּקָם (vayyaqam, “and he arose”; from the hollow verbal root קוּם, qum), the translation assumes a reading וַיִּקַדֵּם (vayyiqaddem, “and he was in front of”; from the verbal root קדם, qdm). See P. K. McCarter, I Samuel (AB), 338.

11 tn Heb “and Abner sat at the side of Saul.”

12 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jonathan) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

13 tn Heb “stuck close after.”

14 tn Heb “the Philistines.”
