1 Kings 6:27

Context
6:27 He put the cherubs in the inner sanctuary of the temple. 1  Their wings were spread out. One of the first cherub’s wings touched one wall and one of the other cherub’s wings touched the opposite wall. The first cherub’s other wing touched the second cherub’s other wing in the middle of the room. 2

1 Kings 8:16

Context
8:16 He told David, 3  ‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from all the tribes of Israel to build a temple in which to live. 4  But I have chosen David to lead my people Israel.’

1 Kings 13:2

Context
13:2 With the authority of the Lord 5  he cried out against the altar, “O altar, altar! This is what the Lord says, ‘Look, a son named Josiah will be born to the Davidic dynasty. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifices on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’” 6

1 Kings 14:5

Context
14:5 But the Lord had told Ahijah, “Look, Jeroboam’s wife is coming to find out from you what will happen to her son, for he is sick. Tell her so-and-so. 7  When she comes, she will be in a disguise.”

1 Kings 17:14

Context
17:14 For this is what the Lord God of Israel says, ‘The jar of flour will not be empty and the jug of oil will not run out until the day the Lord makes it rain on the surface of the ground.’”

1 Kings 18:27

Context
18:27 At noon Elijah mocked them, “Yell louder! After all, he is a god; he may be deep in thought, or perhaps he stepped out for a moment or has taken a trip. Perhaps he is sleeping and needs to be awakened.” 8

1 Kings 19:11

Context
19:11 The Lord 9  said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Look, the Lord is ready to pass by.”

A very powerful wind went before the Lord, digging into the mountain and causing landslides, 10  but the Lord was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

1 Kings 21:2

Context
21:2 Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard so I can make a vegetable garden out of it, for it is adjacent to my palace. I will give you an even better vineyard in its place, or if you prefer, 11  I will pay you silver for it.” 12

1 tn Heb “in the midst of the inner house,” i.e., in the inner sanctuary.

2 tn Heb “and their wings were in the middle of the room, touching wing to wing.”

3 tn Heb “saying.”

4 tn Heb “to build a house for my name to be there.”

sn To build a temple in which to live (Heb “to build a house for my name to be there”). In the OT, the word “name” sometimes refers to one’s reputation or honor. The “name” of the Lord sometimes designates the Lord himself, being indistinguishable from the proper name.

5 tn Heb “by the word of the Lord.

6 sn ‘Lookyou.’ For the fulfillment of this prophecy see 2 Kgs 23:15-20.

7 sn Tell her so-and-so. Certainly the Lord gave Ahijah a specific message to give to Jeroboam’s wife (see vv. 6-16), but the author of Kings here condenses the Lord’s message with the words “so-and-so.” For dramatic effect he prefers to have us hear the message from Ahijah’s lips as he speaks to the king’s wife.

8 sn Elijah’s sarcastic proposals would have been especially offensive and irritating to Baal’s prophets, for they believed Baal was imprisoned in the underworld as death’s captive during this time of drought. Elijah’s apparent ignorance of their theology is probably designed for dramatic effect; indeed the suggestion that Baal is away on a trip or deep in sleep comes precariously close to the truth as viewed by the prophets.

9 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

10 tn Heb “tearing away the mountains and breaking the cliffs” (or perhaps, “breaking the stones”).

11 tn Heb “if it is good in your eyes.”

12 tc The Old Greek translation includes the following words: “And it will be mine as a garden of herbs.”
