1 Kings 5:6

Context
5:6 So now order some cedars of Lebanon to be cut for me. My servants will work with your servants. I will pay your servants whatever you say is appropriate, for you know that we have no one among us who knows how to cut down trees like the Sidonians.”

1 Kings 8:35

Context

8:35 “The time will come when 1  the skies are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people 2  sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, 3  and turn away from their sin because you punish 4  them,

1 Kings 8:46

Context

8:46 “The time will come when your people 5  will sin against you (for there is no one who is sinless!) and you will be angry with them and deliver them over to their enemies, who will take them as prisoners to their own land, 6  whether far away or close by.

1 Kings 10:21

Context

10:21 All of King Solomon’s cups were made of gold, and all the household items in the Palace of the Lebanon Forest were made of pure gold. There were no silver items, for silver was not considered very valuable in Solomon’s time. 7

1 Kings 19:4

Context
19:4 while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrub 8  and asked the Lord to take his life: 9  “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.” 10

1 tn Heb “when.” In the Hebrew text vv. 35-36a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

2 tn Heb “they”; the referent (your people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

3 tn Heb “confess [or perhaps, “praise”] your name.”

4 tn The Hebrew text has “because you answer them,” as if the verb is from עָנָה (’anah, “to answer”). However, this reference to a divine answer is premature, since the next verse asks for God to intervene in mercy. It is better to revocalize the consonantal text as תְעַנֵּם (tÿannem, “you afflict them”), a Piel verb form from the homonym עָנָה (“to afflict”).

5 tn Heb “they”; the referent (your people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn Heb “the land of the enemy.”

7 tn Heb “there was no silver, it was not regarded as anything in the days of Solomon.”

8 tn Or “broom tree” (also in v. 5).

9 tn Heb “and asked with respect to his life to die.”

10 tn Heb “fathers.”
