1 Kings 11:40

Context
11:40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam escaped to Egypt and found refuge with King Shishak of Egypt. 1  He stayed in Egypt until Solomon died.

1 Kings 18:28

18:28 So they yelled louder and, in accordance with their prescribed ritual, 2  mutilated themselves with swords and spears until their bodies were covered with blood. 3

22:11 Zedekiah son of Kenaanah made iron horns and said, “This is what the Lord says, ‘With these you will gore Syria until they are destroyed.’”

22:27 Say, ‘This is what the king says, “Put this man in prison. Give him only a little bread and water 4  until I safely return.”’” 5

sn mutilated…covered with blood. This self-mutilation was a mourning rite designed to facilitate Baal’s return from the underworld.

4 tn Heb “the bread of affliction and the water of affliction.”

5 tn Heb “come in peace.” So also in v. 28.
