1 Kings 17:1

Context
Elijah Visits a Widow in Sidonian Territory

17:1 Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As certainly as the Lord God of Israel lives (whom I serve), 11  there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command.” 12

1 tn Heb “son of Haggith,” but since this formula usually designates the father (who in this case was David), the translation specifies that David was Adonijah’s father.

sn Haggith was one of David’s wives (2 Sam 3:4; 2 Chr 3:2).

2 tn Heb “lifting himself up.”

3 tn Heb “saying.”

4 tn Or “he acquired for himself.”

5 tn Heb “to run ahead of him.”

6 tn Heb “which I placed before you.”

7 tn Heb “and walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

8 tn Heb “give.”

9 tn Heb “so there might be a lamp for David my servant all the days before me in Jerusalem.” The metaphorical “lamp” symbolizes the Davidic dynasty. Because this imagery is unfamiliar to the modern reader, the translation “so my servant David’s dynasty may continue to serve me” has been used.

10 tn Heb “so there might be a lamp for David my servant all the days before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for myself to put my name there.”

11 tn Heb “before whom I stand.”

12 tn Heb “except at the command of my word.”
