11:6 2  David said, “Whoever attacks 3  the Jebusites first will become commanding general!” 4  So Joab son of Zeruiah attacked 5  first and became commander. 6 

1 Chronicles 13:11

Context

13:11 David was angry because the Lord attacked Uzzah; 7  so he called that place Perez Uzzah, 8  which remains its name to this very day.

1 tn Heb “and in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagrites and they fell by their hand and they lived in their tents unto all the face of the east of Gilead.”

2 sn Verse 6 inserts into the narrative parenthetical information about Joab’s role in the conquest of the city. Verse 7 then picks up where v. 5 left off.

3 tn Or perhaps “strikes down.”

4 tn Heb “head and officer.”

5 tn Heb “went up.”

6 tn Heb “head.”

7 tn Heb “because the Lord broke out [with] breaking out [i.e., an outburst] against Uzzah.”

8 sn The name Perez Uzzah means in Hebrew “the outburst [against] Uzzah.”
