35:20 For they do not try to make peace with others,

but plan ways to deceive those who are unsuspecting.

For the one who promotes peace has a future.

peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky.

tn Heb “for they do not speak peace.”

tn Heb “but against the quiet ones of the land words of deceit they plan.” The imperfect verbal forms in v. 20 highlight their characteristic behavior.

tn Heb “for [there is] an end for a man of peace.” Some interpret אַחֲרִית (’akharit, “end”) as referring to offspring (see the next verse and Ps 109:13; cf. NEB, NRSV).

tn Heb “sprout up,” like crops. This verse continues the metaphor of rain utilized in v. 6.
