Luke 11:21

11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are safe.

Luke 14:27

14:27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Luke 18:28

18:28 And Peter said, “Look, we have left everything we own to follow you!”

tn The referent of the expression “a strong man” is Satan.

tn The word αὐλή (aulh) describes any building large and elaborate enough to have an interior courtyard, thus “dwelling, palace, mansion” (L&N 7.6).

tn Grk “his goods are in peace.”

sn It was customary practice in a Roman crucifixion for the prisoner to be made to carry his own cross. Jesus is speaking figuratively here in the context of rejection. If the priority is not one’s allegiance to Jesus, then one will not follow him in the face of possible rejection; see Luke 9:23.

tn Grk “and come after.” In combination with the verb ἔρχομαι (ercomai) the improper preposition ὀπίσω (opisw) means “follow.”

tn Or “left our homes,” “left our possessions”; Grk “left our own things.” The word ἴδιος (idios) can refer to one’s home (including the people and possessions in it) or to one’s property or possessions. Both options are mentioned in BDAG 467 s.v. 4.b. See also I. H. Marshall, Luke (NIGTC), 688; D. L. Bock, Luke (BECNT), 2:1488.

tn Grk “We have left everything we own and followed you.” Koine Greek often used paratactic structure when hypotactic was implied.
