Joshua 4:7

4:7 tell them how the water of the Jordan stopped flowing ¹  before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the water of the Jordan stopped flowing. ²  These stones will be a lasting memorial for the Israelites.”

Joshua 4:18

4:18 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the middle of the Jordan, and as soon as they set foot on dry land, ³  the water of the Jordan flowed again and returned to flood stage. ⁴

Achan Sins and is Punished

7:1 But the Israelites disobeyed the command about the city’s riches. ⁵  Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, ⁶  son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, stole some of the riches. ⁷  The Lord was furious with the Israelites. ⁸ 

Joshua 7:26

7:26 Then they erected over him a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day ⁹ ) and the Lord’s anger subsided. So that place is called the Valley of Disaster to this very day.

Joshua 15:13

15:13 Caleb son of Jephunneh was assigned Kiriath Arba (that is Hebron) within the tribe of Judah, according to the Lord’s instructions to Joshua. (Arba was the father of Anak.) ¹⁰

sn This incident illustrates well the principle of corporate solidarity and corporate guilt. The sin of one man brought the Lord’s anger down upon the entire nation.

⁹ tc Heb “to this day.” The phrase “to this day” is omitted in the LXX and may represent a later scribal addition.
