The wheel of one’s wagon rolls over it,

but his horses do not crush it.

sn The irrational arrogance of the Assyrians (v. 15) will prompt the judgment about to be described.

tn Heb “will send leanness against his healthy ones”; NASB, NIV “will send a wasting disease.”

tc Heb “and in the place of his glory burning will burn, like the burning of fire.” The highly repetitive text (יֵקַד יְקֹד כִּיקוֹד אֵשׁ, yeqad yiqod kiqodesh) may be dittographic; if the second consonantal sequence יקד is omitted, the text would read “and in the place of his glory, it will burn like the burning of fire.”

tn Heb “my consecrated ones,” i.e., those who have been set apart by God for the special task of carrying out his judgment.

tn Heb “my warriors with respect to my anger.”

tn Heb “the boasting ones of my pride”; cf. ASV, NASB, NRSV “my proudly exulting ones.”

tn Heb “days upon a year.”

tn Or perhaps, “olive.” See 24:13.

tn Or “the redeemed of the Lord” (KJV, NAB).

10 tn Heb “you will leave your name for an oath to my chosen ones.”

sn For an example of such a curse formula see Jer 29:22.

11 sn This hyperbolic statement likens the coming transformation of Jerusalem (see vv. 18-19) to a new creation of the cosmos.

12 tn Or perhaps, “the former things” (so ASV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); TEV “The events of the past.”

13 tn Heb “and they will not come up on the mind.”
