tn The text simply has “from man to beast, to creatures, and to birds of the air.” The use of the prepositions עַדמִן (min...ad) stresses the extent of the judgment in creation.

tn Heb “I, look, I confirm.” The particle הִנְנִי (hinni) used with the participle מֵקִים (meqim) gives the sense of immediacy or imminence, as if to say, “Look! I am now confirming.”

tn The three pronominal suffixes (translated “you,” “your,” and “you”) are masculine plural. As v. 8 indicates, Noah and his sons are addressed.

tn The temporal indicator (וְהָיָה, vÿhayah, conjunction + the perfect verb form), often translated “it will be,” anticipates a future development.

tn Heb “for all the land which you see to you I will give it and to your descendants.”

tn The connective “and” is not present in the Hebrew text; it has been supplied for purposes of English style.

tn The Hitpael form הִתְהַלֵּךְ (hithallekh) means “to walk about”; it also can carry the ideas of moving about, traversing, going back and forth, or living in an area. It here has the connotation of traversing the land to survey it, to look it over.

tn Heb “the land to its length and to its breadth.” This phrase has not been included in the translation because it is somewhat redundant (see the note on the word “throughout” in this verse).

sn I will also give your camels water. It would be an enormous test for a young woman to water ten camels. The idea is that such a woman would not only be industrious but hospitable and generous.

10 tn Heb “And let the young woman to whom I say, ‘Lower your jar that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink and I will also give your camels water,’ – her you have appointed for your servant, for Isaac, and by it I will know that you have acted in faithfulness with my master.”

11 tn Heb “And what is this to me, a birthright?”

12 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jacob) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

13 tn Heb “said.”

14 tn Heb “and he said, ‘I [am] your son, your firstborn.’” The order of the introductory clause and the direct discourse has been rearranged for stylistic reasons.

15 tn Heb “set your wage for me so I may give [it].”

16 tn Heb “sins, offenses.” He probably refers here to the offenses that landed him in prison (see 40:1).

17 tn Heb “to you, saying.”

18 tn The cohortative after the imperative indicates purpose here.

19 tn Heb “that I may set my eyes upon him.”

20 tn Heb “For am I.”
