Acts 26:24

26:24 As Paul ¹  was saying these things in his defense, Festus ²  exclaimed loudly, “You have lost your mind, ³  Paul! Your great learning is driving you insane!”

Acts 25:24

25:24 Then Festus ⁴  said, “King Agrippa, ⁵  and all you who are present here with us, you see this man about whom the entire Jewish populace ⁶  petitioned ⁷  me both in Jerusalem ⁸  and here, ⁹  shouting loudly ¹⁰  that he ought not to live any longer.

sn The expression “You have lost your mind” would be said to someone who speaks incredible things, in the opinion of the hearer. Paul’s mention of the resurrection (v. 23) was probably what prompted Festus to say this.

BDAG 825 s.v. πλῆθος 2.b.γ states, “people, populace, population…τὸ πλῆθος the populace…ἅπαν τὸ πλ. τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων Ac 25:24.” However, the actions of the leadership are seen by Luke as representing the actions of the entire nation, so the remark is not inaccurate.
