2 Kings 7:2
7:2 An officer who was the king’s right-hand man 1 responded to the prophet, 2 “Look, even if the Lord made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?” 3 Elisha 4 said, “Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!” 5
2 Kings 7:19
7:19 But the officer replied to the prophet, “Look, even if the Lord made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?” 6 Elisha 7 said, “Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!” 8
2 Kings 12:18
12:18 King Jehoash of Judah collected all the sacred items that his ancestors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had consecrated, as well as his own sacred items and all the gold that could be found in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and the royal palace. He sent it all 9 to King Hazael of Syria, who then withdrew 10 from Jerusalem.
2 Kings 14:6
14:6 But he did not execute the sons of the assassins. He obeyed the Lord’s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses, 11 “Fathers must not be put to death for what their sons do, 12 and sons must not be put to death for what their fathers do. 13 A man must be put to death only for his own sin.” 14
2 Kings 18:32
18:32 until I come and take you to a land just like your own – a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Then you will live and not die. Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, “The Lord will rescue us.”
2 Kings 19:29
19:29 15 This will be your confirmation that I have spoken the truth: 16 This year you will eat what grows wild, 17 and next year 18 what grows on its own from that. But in the third year you will plant seed and harvest crops; you will plant vines and consume their produce. 19
1 tn Heb “the officer on whose hand the king leans.”
2 tn Heb “man of God.”
3 tn Heb “the Lord was making holes in the sky, could this thing be?” Opening holes in the sky would allow the waters stored up there to pour to the earth and assure a good crop. But, the officer argues, even if this were to happen, it would take a long time to grow and harvest the crop.
4 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
5 tn Heb “you will not eat from there.”
6 tn Heb “the Lord was making holes in the sky, could this thing be?” See the note at 7:2.
7 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
8 tn Heb “you will not eat from there.”
tn In the Hebrew text vv. 18-19a are one lengthy sentence, “When the man of God spoke to the king…, the officer replied to the man of God, ‘Look…so soon?’” The translation divides this sentence up for stylistic reasons.
9 tn The object (“it all”) is supplied in the translation for clarification.
10 tn Heb “went up.”
11 tn Heb “as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses which the Lord commanded, saying.”
12 tn Heb “on account of sons.”
13 tn Heb “on account of fathers.”
14 sn This law is recorded in Deut 24:16.
15 tn At this point the word concerning the king of Assyria (vv. 21-28) ends and the Lord again directly addresses Hezekiah and the people (see v. 20).
16 tn Heb “and this is your sign.” In this case the אוֹת (’ot), “sign,” is a future confirmation of God’s intervention designated before the actual intervention takes place. For similar “signs” see Exod 3:12 and Isa 7:14-25.
17 sn This refers to crops that grew up on their own (that is, without cultivation) from the seed planted in past years.
18 tn Heb “and in the second year.”
19 tn The four plural imperatival verb forms in v. 29b are used rhetorically. The Lord commands the people to plant, harvest, etc. to emphasize the certainty of restored peace and prosperity. See IBHS 572 §34.4.c.
