1 Kings 2:42
2:42 the king summoned 1 Shimei and said to him, “You will recall 2 that I made you take an oath by the Lord, and I solemnly warned you, ‘If you ever leave and go anywhere, 3 know for sure that you will certainly die.’ You said to me, ‘The proposal is acceptable; I agree to it.’ 4
1 Kings 18:12
18:12 But when I leave you, the Lord’s spirit will carry you away so I can’t find you. 5 If I go tell Ahab I’ve seen you, he won’t be able to find you and he will kill me. 6 That would not be fair, 7 because your servant has been a loyal follower of 8 the Lord from my youth.
1 tn Heb “sent and summoned.”
2 tn Heb “Is it not [true]…?” In the Hebrew text the statement is interrogative; the rhetorical question expects the answer, “Of course it is.”
3 tn Heb “here or there.”
4 tn Heb “good is the word; I have heard.”
5 tn Heb “to [a place] which I do not know.”
6 tn Heb “and I will go to inform Ahab and he will not find you and he will kill me.”
7 tn The words “that would not be fair” are added to clarify the logic of Obadiah’s argument.
8 tn Heb “has feared the Lord” (also see the note at 1 Kgs 18:3).
