1 Kings 13:33--14:2

Context
A Prophet Announces the End of Jeroboam’s Dynasty

13:33 After this happened, Jeroboam still did not change his evil ways; 1  he continued to appoint common people 2  as priests at the high places. Anyone who wanted the job he consecrated as a priest. 3  13:34 This sin caused Jeroboam’s dynasty 4  to come to an end and to be destroyed from the face of the earth.

14:1 5 At that time Jeroboam’s son Abijah became sick. 14:2 Jeroboam told his wife, “Disguise 6  yourself so that people cannot recognize you are Jeroboam’s wife. Then go to Shiloh; Ahijah the prophet, who told me I would rule over this nation, lives there. 7

1 tn Heb “did not turn from his evil way.”

2 sn The expression common people refers to people who were not Levites. See 1 Kgs 12:31.

3 tn Heb “and one who had the desire he was filling his hand so that he became [one of] the priests of the high places.”

4 tn Heb “house.”

5 tc Some mss of the Old Greek lack vv. 1-20.

6 tn Heb “Get up, change yourself.”

7 tn Heb “look, Ahijah the prophet is there, he told me [I would be] king over this nation.”
