thammuz, n. [Heb. thammūz.].
- A deity among the ancient Syrians, in honor of whom the Hebrew idolatresses held an annual lamentation. This deity has been conjectured to be the same with the Phœnician Adon, or Adonis. Milton. [1913 Webster]
